Sometimes Motivation Needs Help


It’s another Monday morning. The dawning of a new week. The year has three more of these mornings remaining. How are you handling the things you need to get done before year end? Are you coping well or feeling stressed and overwhelmed? I am feeling stressed and overwhelmed.

I have to confess that I woke up this Monday morning in a not so positive mood. All I could think about was how much I have to do, and how little time there always seems to be to get it done.  The goals sometimes seem like they are so far away and the progress so small that it seems impossible that I could ever make them all into a reality. In short, my motivation this morning was low. I was starting to feel like I was getting overwhelmed by the negativity and the worry that it was never going to be enough.

Fortunately, because of my work and my studies I have some awareness of what to do to get myself back into a positive state of mind. I also know that it is necessary to strive for that positive way of thinking and looking at your day, because it enables you to be able to tackle the various challenges that will come up during the course of any workday.  I am also very aware that it is not easy to change your mindset unless you take deliberate action and that sometimes, when it comes to improving your mood, it is important to engage in specific steps to get into a state of positive energy.

My morning routine usually involves my listening to some kind of motivational video.  I generally identify one video with a powerful and empowering message and listen to it every day for 90 days. I came to the end of one such cycle about two weeks ago. For the last two weeks since, I have been listening to music in the morning to get my energy up where it needs to be. However, this morning I went back to YouTube and identified a new video.

For me this emphasizes the fact that motivation does not last. For each and every one of us, there comes a time when you need to move beyond whether or not you want to do something. You have to have a strategy for getting your energy right so that you can go out and do what needs to be done.  For me this morning, I had to show up for my participants and I had to be in the right frame of mind. It was necessary.  You may have a different reason why you need to show up and perform in a high energy state but the end result is the same. We all need to have a plan for getting our energy up and keeping it up throughout the day.

My circumstances this morning also emphasize the reality that no one is above moodiness. We all have these moments in our lives. However, what varies for each person is how we respond to them, how long we allow them to last and how much we give in to them. Each person’s situation is different. Each individual’s personality is different. People have different inherent set points for their level of happiness and optimism and some of that comes from our genetics. The rest comes from practice. Therefore the ease with which one person might bounce back from their negative mood may be different than another’s.

Therefore we each need to identify what it takes to get us into a positive way of thinking when we are not inherently there. We need to have a routine and we need to be able to engage in the identified activities readily when necessary. Motivation needs help. No one is in a positive mood all the time. Motivation does not last but it is possible to get your energy up so that you can tackle your day. Knowing your why, the reason why it matters that you get into a strong, positive frame of mind also helps. These are the truths that I have learned along the way and these are what help me when I need to tackle my mindset in the morning.
