Three Quotations On My Wall

Guidance on what it takes to be successful can come from any source.  I have often found that inspiration and learning opportunities can be all around us and if we are willing to look, we will find them. I currently have on my wall, three quotations that I think are useful in helping me frame my thinking about my work, my life and my purpose in the world.

Rumi’s quote reminds me that patience is important and no matter how you stress and run after something, it will not change the fact that it will happen when it is supposed to and not one second earlier.

“When I run after what I think I want, my days are a furnace of stress and anxiety; if I sit in my own place of patience, what I need flows to me, and without pain. From this I understand that what I want also wants me, is looking for me and attracting me. There is a great secret here for any one who can grasp it.” – Rumi

Hunter Thompson’s quotation reminds me that it is okay to take some risks, try and fail sometimes. It also reminds me that life is about giving and sharing ourselves so we should not worry about being used up because that is how the collective will grow. It also reminds me to have a little fun along the way and to have great experiences when I can because that is what life is all about.

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming ‘ Wow! What a ride!’ “- Hunter Thompson

Emily Dickinson’s poem, helps me to remember my why. I do what I do because I want to help. It also reminds me that I don’t have to try to help everyone. I can focus on just my little corner of the world and be of service where I can.

If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching;
Or cool one pain;
Or help one fainting robin unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain.
– Emily Dickinson
