7 Tips for Using Time Wisely

We know that time is a finite resource.  As a result, most people are always on the lookout for guidance on how they can be more effective and make the best possible use of the time they have available to them each day.  Here are some proven tips that will help you to get the most out of your time each day:

  1. Do your biggest, most difficult or most creative tasks when your energy is at its highest.

For most people this is the morning.  So try to leave menial, less difficult tasks for later in the day.  This also includes checking email, social media updates and catching up with your friends and colleagues at work.  These types of activities are better scheduled for a time when they can help you to take a break and re-energize yourself as you gear up for your next big set of work tasks.

  1. Schedule only three major tasks for completion during your work day.

This ensures that you have space in your schedule to accommodate the unplanned work requests that may come from your boss, colleagues or direct reports.  This ensures that you are not feeling overwhelmed all the time.  It also makes you look like a proactive individual who has the smarts to be prepared for the unexpected.

  1. Be clear with anyone who is adding things to your work plan.

Ensure that they are clear about when you will be able to deliver any item you are completing for them.  Never make a commitment you cannot keep.  It ruins your image.  Instead be clear about what you are working on currently and the time that you will be able to return the completed task to the one delegating it.

  1. Use an integrated planning system.

Choose one where you can include your personal and professional goals and the tasks that you need to complete in order to make the goals a reality.  You want to keep all your lists and reminders in one place as this ensures that you never miss an important deadline in your personal or professional life.

  1. Make sure that you use a prioritized daily task list.

You always want to focus on your most important tasks first.  You can even block off time segments in your calendar and assign them for specific activities in your list.

  1. Break your goals down into more manageable pieces.

The only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time.  No matter how big a project or ambition is, breaking it down into smaller pieces makes it seem more doable to anyone and thus less daunting.

  1. Manage your energy throughout the day.

Start your day off with a great morning routine that works for you.  This should have you leaving home on a high energy level.  As your energy dips throughout the day, you want to identify what it takes for you to get it back up.  Take a walk, chat with someone, listen to great music, listen to comedy, change your scenery, whatever it takes.  You have to take the time to identify what works for you.
